A cool evening in the streets of Mamandaku.
She stood beside him carrying a week-old baby.
He was focused on the crowd clapping his hands.
Probably thinking of the one million things that have transpired in the last 10 months.
They both wore the same ceremonial attire which is the culture of the Yorubas when naming their child.
Her 3rd child, just 3 years old walked up to her while she was dancing to the music from the church choir and instrumentalist.
Oh, I recall her dance steps. It’s not something you easily forget; hands motioning right and left moving the body with it. Then she gives it a “rababa” going down and rising to the tune.
Her beautiful smile too, it’s not something you miss.
The minister comes up, and Christens the child, the names they both gave him. Then God said that wasn’t enough, so the minister had to add a new name to the list — ”Oluwasegun”
Oluwasegun means “God has won the battle.”
Okay okay okay okay
It seems you like stories a lot or will I say gossip?
But we have a series to finish.
That was my naming ceremony which I had the privilege to watch via a cassette even though it was shot in ’97. I believe the tape is gone but some of the memory is still alive.
I also had the privilege of seeing pictures, the outstanding one I can remember is that of some of my uncles preparing the goats that day. The very black smoke rose to the heavens.
This week, you will be receiving 2 letters from me.
This would be the first and then the second will come by the end of the week.
We will be rounding up our series on the ‘Environment’.
One key environment we haven’t talked about is the Mind.
The mind is a world of its own and it requires gardening.
I believe shaping the environment of your mind and spirit is more critical than that of your physical environment.
Even if they all work hand in hand just like the Trinity.
While I was back in the North, my physical environment was a bit limited but my mind wasn’t.
I did a few things that helped me stand out.
Have you ever felt like your physical environment is dragging you back?
Are you stuck in a place that doesn’t uplift you?
Do you feel like you're surrounded by people who don’t share your vision?
Well, I'm happy to tell you that…
…You can change this with your Mind Environment, and it’s something you can control, no matter where you are.
How?
Stay with me. You'll learn a thing or 10 from today's letter.
You can build your mind despite the limitations in your physical environment through:
• Books: Books are your small but mighty mentors. These page-turning materials help you discover how the greatest minds of all time think. Books transport you to a world of limitless possibilities.
Imagine having lunch with Martin Luther King Jr. or a coffee chat with Richard Brandsen.
• Social Media: Social media could be a blessing or a curse, it all depends on how you use it. Follow accounts that motivate, educate, and charge you to improve.
Unfollow the ones that make you think less of yourself. Your feed should serve you inspiration, not frustration.
• Mentorship: Having someone who has walked the path you're on to guide you is very powerful. They can offer incredible advice and support.
Reach out to someone you admire, pay or serve them to have access to them. Most people are more than willing to share their knowledge and experiences, as long as they see you're committed to doing what it takes.
• Events: Networking and Learning
Attending either virtual or physical events can significantly impact your mind environment.
Boot camps, webinars, workshops, and conferences are excellent opportunities to learn new things and network with like-minded individuals. You could discover your next big idea, meet investors or the love of your life (lol).
• Movies: This is another fantastic way to build your mind. Not only do movies inspire and educate, but they can also provide a much-needed escape.
Remember that movie that left you feeling super inspired? Was it a documentary on innovation? Or a true life story about a great leader?
Your physical environment might have its limitations, but your mind's environment is limitless.
It can help you build a mental space that transforms your life. Use it wisely!
Using it wisely is majorly in the choices we make.
Actionable Steps:
You should have figured out your dream environment by now. Do the following activities in line with that future you dreamt of, even if it’s not a reality now.
Read a book that challenges your current way of thinking.
Watch an inspiring movie.
Take control of your social media feed.
Attend events that push you to be better.
Reach out to someone you'd like to be your mentor.
Birthday Visit to the Orphanage
I remember writing this to you before my last birthday.
For my Birthday - 28th August
I have a list of things I want to do:
Launch my Website
Host a few friends for a get-together. (Most said Yes already)
For the first one - Here is my new website - www.samfemi.com
You can check it out and let me know what you think.
For the second one - We had a very good time at the orphanage home with lots of support and donations from friends. A Big Thank you to everyone who supported me.
I had a good time getting to know them, sharing the word, praying with them, playing with them, breaking bread and they also prayed for me.
